Cama Gwini, whose birth name is Siphokazi Buti, is a highly distinctive South African singer-songwriter from the Eastern Cape. Known for her staunch dedication to her Xhosa roots and cultural identity, Gwini established her career in the mid-2000s by developing a powerful Afro-fusion sound that incorporates Xhosa oral tradition and deep spiritual narratives. Her debut album, “Zivile,” (2007), launched her to national prominence, blending Afro-jazz, Afro-soul, and Maskandi. This work earned her two South African Music Awards (SAMA) nominations in 2008 for Best Newcomer and Best African Contemporary. She followed this success with the album “Emandulo,” (Ancient Times) (2009), securing a SAMA nomination for Female Artist of the Year in 2010.
A pivotal moment in her career arrived with her third album, “Re-Birth,” (2012). Released after widely publicized false rumors of her death, the album served as a powerful thematic declaration of resilience. It marked a significant evolution in her sound, where she intentionally moved away from pure Afro-jazz to embrace a more aggressive, rock-influenced aesthetic. This fusion of traditional sounds with modern, heavier instrumentation cemented her status as a boundary-pushing figure, earning another SAMA nomination for Best African Adult Contemporary Album in 2013. Gwini’s artistry continues to be defined by her raw, soulful vocal delivery and a strong, rooted cultural authenticity.
